7 Tooth-Friendly Snacks for Kids

Children Eating Fruits — Runcorn, QLD — Runcorn Dental

Keeping your kids' teeth healthy requires more than a good dental hygiene routine. In addition to teaching kids to floss and brush, you also need to ensure that they eat a diet that is low in sugar and contains all the nutrients they need for healthy teeth.

If you have trouble coming up with healthy snacks that your children will eat, take a look at this list of several tooth-friendly snacks that are likely to appeal to children.

1. Fresh Watermelon

Studies show that people who eat plenty of fresh fruit have low rates of dental cavities compared to those who eat very little. Watermelon is one of the best fruits for teeth as it is low in sugar and acid. Let your kids sink their teeth into a juicy slice of watermelon to help keep their teeth healthy.

2. Yoghurt and Berries

Yoghurt and berries make a delicious dessert for children. With a creamy texture and a sweet, tangy taste, kids are sure to ask for more. Choose plain yoghurt without added sugar to maximise the oral health benefits. Serve with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries or a mixture of all these berries to provide a burst of nutrients.

3. Ants on a Log

Ants on a log is a popular children's snack consisting of a celery stalk filled with peanut butter and topped with some raisins. Choose peanut butter without added sugar to make this filling snack as healthy for the teeth as possible.

4. Cheddar and Apple Slices

Cheese is an excellent source of calcium, which is essential to help children develop strong and healthy teeth. The sharp flavour of cheddar is also a perfect complement to the sweetness of apples.

Treat your kids to a plate of cheddar cubes and apple slices every day to help protect their teeth. Try pairing Red Delicious apples with cheddar, Golden Delicious apples with brie or Granny Smith apples with a mild washed-rind cheese.

5. Hummus With Whole-Wheat Pita Triangles

Hummus is also a tooth-friendly snack. Calcium naturally occurs in the chickpeas and sesame seed paste that are used to make this savoury dip. Kids love dipping pita triangles into delicious hummus. To protect their teeth, always choose whole-wheat pita, which breaks down more slowly than white pita in the mouth and therefore exposes children's teeth to fewer natural sugars.

6. Carrot Sticks

Carrots are naturally sweet and crunchy, which means they appeal to kids. They are also high in fibre, which means they can clean plaque from your children's teeth when they bite into them. The act of chewing carrots stimulates your child's saliva glands, causing them to produce more bacteria-fighting saliva.

Let your kids snack on as many carrots as they like, perhaps with a dip such as natural yoghurt or hummus.

7. Hard-Boiled Eggs

Hard-boiled eggs are an easy and nutritious snack to feed to kids. With very little sugar and plenty of healthy protein, eggs are an ideal food for oral health. Peel the eggs before giving them to your children so they can easily tuck in.

How to Protect Your Kids' Teeth

By giving these foods to your kids and limiting their consumption of sugary foods, you can reduce their risk of dental cavities. Of course, you also need to keep up a healthy dental hygiene routine of daily brushing and flossing.

The final step in protecting your kids' oral health is to schedule regular check-ups with a dentist. At Runcorn Dental, we have four dentists with a combined experience of more than 25 years. Get in touch today to schedule check-ups for yourself and your family.

Some people need orthodontic treatment to correct the position of their teeth. For example, if you have significant misalignments or overcrowding, then braces are likely to be the most effective way to straighten all your teeth at once. However, some people have more minor problems with tooth positioning. They may simply have one tooth that is slightly crooked or that doesn't sit precisely straight. Orthodontic treatment might be overkill here; however, your dentist has a range of cosmetic straightening techniques that could fix your problem and improve your smile. What are they?
